Show hidden files and folders dosen't work
Von: hhkaddoura *

Hi there,

Hope you are doing all fine, sorry for this but desperately need technical help in XP Pro, I know it is a disturbing thing but I've tried everything out and problem persists here is the situation

System
Windows XP Pro SP2- Up- to Date and Windows XP Tablet Edition with SP2

Adobe Flash and Shockwave installed for IE v7

SOPHOS anti virus- Enterprise Edition, with local agent installed for each laptop.

Problem:

Show hidden files and folders doesn't work.

Apparatus:

1. Scan the laptop for Virus and RootKits but laptops were clear and nothing detected.

2. Searched for the Explorer.exe 72233.pf, that file was not found

3. Edit the registry key of the Hidden in the HKCU->Software->Microsoft->windows->current Version->Explorer->advanced

and the SHOWALL registry key in the HKLM->Software->Microsoft->windows->current Version->Explorer->advanced->Folders

4. Imported registry keys and files from a healthy system (another machine working fine).

5. tried the SOPHOS resolution of the SVL32.

6. tried the command line attrib -h

7. tried the command line to scan protected files sfc /scannow

8. Reimaged the laptop

9. installed Registry mechanics.

What drives me crazy:

Nothing of the above worked, the Show hidden files and folders just won't set once I close the dialogue box it will reset to don't show hidden files and folders.

Please did you hear about a real solution that really really really works and works permanently as the problem won't re-appears after rebooting!!

At least want to know if there is a process or service is causing that so it would be stopped!

Appreciate you response and the time you've spent reading my email.

Regards,
Hanane Kaddoura

please try the following to search for the process that undoes the changes you want to make.

Try the program "Regmon" (a registry monitor). here

This Program protocols every touch at the registry (read / write) and shows you, with any luck, the program that disturbs your changes.

Try to find out if your changes are written to the registry and if so, "who" does undo the changes.

good luck,

kruemeltee

Thank you for you immediate response, regret to inform you even your suggested solution didn't work, tried it in more than one laptop and nothing worked out.

Both Laptop vendor and supplier Techs. tried out with no hope. It is even occuring in the desktops

it seems as if the is something like a write protection on the "show/hide hidden files"setting.

As a little workaround try the windows commander alias total commander. This program is able to show hidden files too (I don't know if the software needs the setting of windows to show these files or if it work alone for itself)

so you have to get to know what program is able to write protect the setting you want to change.

it sounds joking, but are you logged in as admin on the computer? Are the hidden files from your current installation or from another one?

Try the protected Login from Windows (using the f8 key on Windows startup). Login an superuser (admin) and try to show/hide all hidden files there ... is this working?

Up to moment all unnecessary services and processes are stopped.

I logged into the system using local admin and even domain admin credentials whenever I did the troubleshooting

Both system files and the user created files won't show, even if I searched for that folder/file, using the windows search and specify to look into hidden files, when you uncheck the hidden checkbox it appears as vivid color in search result window, but when you look into the location where the hidden folder reside it doesn't appear.

tried to reinstall the Windows XP Pro tablet pc 2005 edition that came along the Windows Volume license with no luck even the window XP pro + SP3 that didn't made a difference.

I am really frustrated, any how I really give up, even the people of MS didn’t respond to our incident since reported back in October 2007.

Really appreciate your immediate response, cooperation and on the top your concern.

Once again thank you so much

well you sure hid those files.. Grin
have you already tried to show them again in the save Mode/F8
a nother possibility, could be a system recovery/regeneration on the Date/Point befor the problem starten..

Did you try "the simple way", without any registry changes by just selecting the folder, right-click it and then change the settings from hidden to "not-hidden"?

 Angry Angry Angry Angry
to show those hidden folders you have to set the folder options to do so and That what started the problem, so I tried to be smart and search for the files, and specifying the criteria to inclued Hidden files and folders that worked files appeared in the search result panelas but when clearing the checkmark for ''Hidden'' of file or folder properties didn't work, I mean that didn't undo the Hidden attribute although the hidden checkbox now is clear!!

seriously I give up I have 100 laptop having exactly the same problem which are either IBM,DELL or TOSHIBA

They worked fine for a while but then it started that mania!!!!!! Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

I highly appreiciate your help and cooperation
